How the index is calculated

Each component is normalized to a baseline of 100, then combined into a composite index.

Component index: Iᵢ = 100 × (Cᵢ / Bᵢ)

Overall index: CHC = 100 × Π (Iᵢ/100) ^ wᵢ

  • Property tax
  • Electricity
  • Space heating energy
  • Maintenance (annualized)
  • Home insurance (proxy)

We publish methodology and sources, but not every internal modelling constant.

What it’s built from

  • Public rate tables
  • Verified community submissions
  • Modeled engineering assumptions
  • Aggregated, privacy-safe usage patterns
  • Engineering judgement

We don’t store personal financial inputs as part of the index.

Help expand coverage

If your municipality or utility isn’t represented yet, you can help by submitting the official public rate and a source link. We verify every entry before publishing.
